MINISTER ANNOUNCES "BRAIN GAIN"
Science and Medical Research Minister Frank Sartor today announced a "brain gain" for NSW naming the two winners of the NSW Government’s 2003 BioFirst Awards.
"The NSW Government is doing its bit to turn around the brain drain and make it a brain gain," Mr Sartor said.
One of the winners of the award is Associate Professor Izuru Matsumoto, a world class neuropharmacologist and psychiatrist. He will be joining the Department of Neuropathology at the University of Sydney and will help to develop their unique brain bank and donor programs ("Using our Brains" and "Gift of Hope") that are dedicated to schizophrenia and alcohol related brain damage.
Professor Matsumoto said he was delighted to be receiving the BioFirst Award funding.
"The NSW Tissue Resource Centre at the University of Sydney is the only one of its type in Australia and this funding will accelerate our search for treatments for these diseases," Professor Matsumoto said.
Under the BioFirst Award program the NSW Government will contribute $110,000 per annum to supplement the researchers’ salaries.
